Laser Eye Surgery: Is It Worth Looking Into?

Eyes are probably one of the most important of the five senses because even if you have a hearing or speech problem, you can still enjoy the multi-million hues of nature but if you lose your sight then you lose it all. There are certain specific eye conditions: Myopia, Astigmatism and Hypermetropia, which can lead to serious cataract and cornea related problems in the future. LASIK technology using laser for eye surgery is the solution to correcting your vision if you have myopia, Astigmatism or Hypermetropia.

There are many people out there like you who at times see nothing more than a blur and without their glasses or contact lenses cannot differentiate between colors, people, things and places. But with the LASIK technology, all that can change and astigmatism can be repaired. You will again be able to see after this laser procedure using LASIK technology without straining yourself too much or without the need of contact lenses and glass. For people with astigmatism, it is a relief and for others it is a new found freedom!

There are two types of laser procedures involved, one is known as the PRK or precision surgery and the other is known as the LASIK eye surgery that uses the LASIK technology. Today LASIK technology is being used for treating astigmatism, myopia etc and is seen as a technological advancement in ophthalmology. The flip side of this new advancement is that only 20% of the surgeons or ophthalmologists in the United States are trained and skilled to work on this laser eye surgery procedure that uses the LASIK technology.

So is it really worth looking into? When you ask this question, you need to also know whether you are comfortable with your glass or contact lenses or whether you want to get rid of them. An eye surgery using the LASIK technology is not a foolproof procedure that guarantees 100% recovery. There is a flip side to these procedures that can leave a permanent negative impact like the dry eye syndrome or might not repair your astigmatism at all. So are you ready to take the risk?

As mentioned earlier the two procedures are photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and LASIK eye surgery using LASIK technology. PRK is generally performed using local anesthetic eye drops. PRK procedures are used to reshape the cornea through removal of tissues from the cornea using a computer-controlled ultraviolet beam of light. This beam can remove 39 millionth of an inch of a cornea tissue in 12 billionth of a second using just one pulse.

LASIK technology on the other hand is used for a laser eye surgery, which is a little complex than PRK and is performed mostly for people suffering from nearsightedness and astigmatism. This laser eye surgery procedure is still in its clinical trial phase and has not been officially approved by FDA. Unlike PRK, the skill lies with the surgeon and you should go for this laser eye surgery only if you are mentally prepared to take the risk.
